The Biblical Concept of the Anointing

Though the anointing has unfortunately been misunderstood and misquoted in much of the church these days, the early church understood it very well. Somewhere back in time some well-intentioned minister, or ministers, failed to understand that there is a distinction between the anointing and the operation of the Holy Spirit. Not having a clear understanding of the Biblical application of this powerful process the modern church somehow managed to redefine the entire concept of the anointing. As a result, a whole new way of comprehending the anointing found its way through the church. Over time this school of thought caught on and it eventually became accepted doctrine.

This lack of understanding produced beliefs and practices which are not found anywhere in the Bible. Remember this; God is obligated to His word, not to our doctrines. If we want to experience the anointing in our lives, we need to understand it the way God intended.

For instance, throughout the entire Book of Acts, the church always credits the operating of miracles to the Holy Spirit, not the anointing. Whereas in the modern-day church, many give credit to the anointing and not the Holy Spirit. Even though the anointing contains the operation of the Holy Spirit, it is not the Holy Spirit. This is important to know because there is much confusion in the church regarding this.

It is necessary that we first get a clear understanding of what the Bible says so that we can better distinguish between the Biblical concept of the anointing and the modern-day concept. If you are interested in finding out what the Bible really says about the anointing check out the book, Marked by the Anointing.

To better understand the anointing the way God intended, we must go to where the process was first recorded in the Word of God. We will find this in the book of Genesis, chapter 28. When Jacob journeyed from his father’s house to go and live with his uncle Laban, he settled in to sleep in a place called, Luz. As Jacob slept, he had a dream. In this dream Jacob saw a ladder stretching from heaven to earth. He also saw angels ascending and descending on this ladder with the Lord standing at the top of it. It is in this account of Jacobs dream that we are first introduced to the anointing.

Where the Anointing is First Mentioned

Genesis 28:16
16 Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it.” 17 And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.” 18 So Jacob rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up as a pillar, and poured oil on its top. 19 And he called the name of that place Bethel; however, previously the name of the city had been Luz. NASB

Even though the word anointing is not mentioned at all in this account, the act of anointing is. When Jacob poured the oil upon the pillar, God referred to it as the pillar being anointed. We can see this when God recalls this event in Genesis 31:13.

Genesis 31:13
13’I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed a pillar, …NASB

When Jacob poured the oil upon the pillar, he anointed the pillar. In this introduction to the anointing, we see four very distinct principles at work. These four aspects of the anointing remain consistent throughout the entire Word of God whenever the anointing is present.

The Four Principles of the Anointing

1. Jacob noticed there was something SPECIAL about this place.
In the eyes of the Lord, everyone who is anointed is special and unique and He sees something in them He wants to use.It is the Lord who chooses who to anoint and what to anoint them for.
2. The place was HONORED.
By setting up the pillar, Jacob honored this ground as a place of significant importance. The Lord always places honor upon His anointed, and He requires that His people give honor to whom honor is due.
3. The place was ANOINTED.
When Jacob anointed the pillar, he marked and set this place apart from all other places. The Lord anoints those whom He chooses, marking them and setting them apart for His special use.
4. The place was given a PURPOSE.
By naming the place, Jacob gave it a purpose. Biblically, a name always has meaning and a purpose. In this case, Jacob named the place Bethel, which means, “House of God.” Everyone that is anointed by the Lord is anointed for a specific purpose; and whatever they are anointed to do, the Holy Spirit will empower them to do it.

If we are to minister effectively in the anointing as the Bible clearly indicates we should, then we need to learn how to operate in it the scriptural way, and not just a traditional way. The scriptures show us that when one is anointed, they are now marked and set apart for service and are no longer common with the world around them.
